Sign (Pictograms) - warn, guide, protect, visually convey information in a way that it can’t be misunderstood; attempt to be internationally recognisable and independent of culture.

Semiotics 

Semantics, SYNTAX, PRAGMATICS - *CHECK COP BLOG 

SEMANTICS = dependent on culture etc.

Pragmatics - indicative - informs readers but they don’t have to  something is possible
      -imperative - supposed to influence your behaviour
     -suggestive - appeal to you 

Basic signs: Square, Triangle, Circle (feeling addressed more strongly, depending on characters the viewers will lace themselves inside of outside of circle) pg. 46-7, Arrow (pg. 48), Cross - absolute embodiment of symmetry
