STUDIO BRIEF 2: Independent Research for Group Project

We were to independent do our own interpretations of the concept idea that we have and pitch it to the group tomorrow so that we can gather more design ideas in order to actually start our exhibition design. These were the design ideas which I created in accordance to the 'Origin' idea that my group had.

For the typography, I decided to sample a strong sans-serif font like Futura to possibly give a more contemporary feel to the exhibition. I was thinking we can still go for the museum-y aesthetic however make it a bit more modern and contemporary by firstly choosing a san-serif font as the bases of the titles and overall typeface used throughout the whole exhibition design. On the other hand, I also sampled Bodoni as it's the typeface closest used in Charles Darwin's 'On the Origins of Species'. Because my group wanted a strong museum aesthetic to the whole exhibition, possibly going for a more traditional element to it and going for a more stern and serious serif typeface like Bodoni will show this feel of the whole exhibition, if it was to be chosen throughout the publication, poster etc.

For the logotype, we've decided in the group prior that we wanted to focus with a circle theme, influenced by the O in Origin as well as the cassette roll shape. I created some rough mockups of logotype ideas which we can possibly develop further if it was chosen. I wanted the logotype to be very simple but also effective and catchy, because first of all it needs to fit with every aspect of the collateral of the exhibition as will as also flexible for some alterations e.g. for social media promotions for maybe making a gif or something like that. I've mainly used two circles or represented two parts of a circle to simply represent the two sides of the tape and the new and old or changes in evolution of an origin of a music genre. I think these could work really well as it are easy to alter as well as it can be quite easy to remember as well.

I've tried using two different rough colour schemes to match different feels the exhibition may have, maybe more serious like the greys of a more organic or earthy feel like the browns, linking it back to the origins or something being quite raw and natural as well.

Also, in our group we've talked about possibly using arrows for the logotype to kind of represent the two sides of the cassette tape. I've used both Futura and Bodoni as examples but I think Futura works so much better because it has a more uniformed look to it as well as complimenting the sharp apex's of each letter sand the arrows, highlighting a more clean-cut logotype which can fit the clinical feel of the whole exhibition. It also looks a bit more dynamic with the two opposing arrows giving the logotype a bit more movement and not too serious feel to it as well.

I've tried a bit more playful approaches to the logotype as well making it look quite quirky and dynamic, as a different approach to things. I think with these designs they do look alright it's just they don't really give off the right vibe which I'm trying to get in order t fit the exhibition concept.

Following on the circle theme, I found some stamps as a rough influence for my design ideas. I thought of possibly using a circle shaped ticket or invitation to be given out which included the name of the exhibition and an illustration of a genre on the centre to get people interested in the exhibition. I also thought of using number codes to the design in order for it to correlate to the displays in the actual exhibition. In addition, I thought of maybe putting a simple illustration of the logo/logotype at the back or the information such as time, location, date etc. as well, keeping all the information together whilst having a very compact ticket or invitation that people can easily read and take anywhere with them. Production wise I was thinking maybe on some fairly thick cartridge paper and possibly laser cut the illustration or stamp them on; possibly screen print as well, making them look more appealing and eye-catching so that people will actually want to go the exhibition when they get the invite for it.
collateral ideas
For the layout of the exhibition,  was roughly thinking of using Darwin's 'tree of life' illustration'. It shows how two completely different species can be somehow related to each other as you go further down the tree. Taking this idea, maybe we could display the actual cassettes on the wall in branches as well connecting them to each other. If we were to have each corner of the room in geographical parts, we could display each cassette in relation to the time period in which they emerged in the location; or we could possibly start the branches from left to right or vice versa and connect the cassettes in relation to their time periods too. I think this may be a good way of displaying the cassettes as it shows aspects of evolution and origins as well as keeping a white ordered display as well and not just displaying it in random order.
layout idea
For the publication design idea, I found a spread from Migrant Journal which could be referred in the design. Possibly of the publication or archive design, we can illustrate sections of the world map indicating its relation to the origin of a micro-genre. This can be quite effective as it shows adequate amount of visual illustrations and quick info. about the micro-genre in the publication too so it's not too much writing that will make it too boring for the visitors to look through, but also not too visual and pictorial based that it becomes too abstract and understandable.
publication idea
Further, developing this idea, a zine may also be produced as a distributed part of the collateral to the visitors. The one can contain illustrations and simple micro-genre facts of info. which visitors can take home as a kind of freebie as well.
In terms of social media, Instagram was something I thought could be heavily used, as most people use Instagram nowadays to find events and take pictures as well as hashtag things they like in order to find it or let more people know about it. I also thought of some simple hashtags which could be used through the whole exhibition, as well as a grid layout for the actual posts. By making a circle grid it automatically relates to the circle theme we have as well as keep the feed of the account very consistent and strong. It's also quite unique and interchangeable such as making a gif or video in a circle mode, effectively zooming in on pictures or videos etc. keeping audiences entertained and intrigued at the same time.
