Risen Popularity in Korea

Korean hiphop and hiphop in general have risen in popularity in Korea, this is mainly through the Hiphop competition show in 2012, Show Me The Money aired by cable broadcasting station MNET which specialises in showcasing music shows much like MTV and has a very young audience demographic of teens to 20's. The show have been going on for 6 seasons and every season an increase of participants are seen, showing the increased popularity of the micro-genre in the country.

Due to Show Me The Money,  otherwise 'underground' or Korean rappers that usually don't appear on television became know to the public, which made them popular and increased the publics interest in the micro-genre. Popular rappers nowadays enjoy appearing in public variety broadcast shows which would happen in the past. Public broadcast variety shows such as 'Infinite Challenge' specifically had a hiphop special which included, rappers such as Dok2, BeWhy and Gaeko. The special showed the rappers and members of the show create tracks which talks about the history of the country, which further increased the popularity of the micro-genre to the general Korean public.

Nowadays, 3rd generation rappers in Korea are emerging. As the micro-genre have a huge young following; teens form cliques and rap crews in their respective regions around Korea. To showcase this MNET created a new competition show, High School Rapper specifically for teenage rappers. This touches on the fact that the micro-genre is still very young and quite new in the country.
