Objects and Colours

Objects

1) Gayageum - the use of the Korean traditional instrument like a a 'gayageum' (12 string, string instrument) , has been used in some recent Korean tracks and have been noticeably influenced by the release of a track from competition show 'Show Me the Money' produced by Team Zico and Paloalto in 2015 rapped by Jamezz, Song Mino, Andup and Paloalto. The track is called Turtle Ship' or 'Gubeokseon' and has been inspired by the Korean historical figure General Lee Soonshin who led the Royal Korean Navy during the 15th to 19th century in the Joseon Dynasty against Japanese invaders.

Other tracks that use a similar instrument is a track by Song Minho and Haha for a special episode of variety show Infinite Challenge and looking at using hiphop in order to talk about the Korean history. There track ''Shoot' specifically talks about General Lee Soonshin and the their success in defeating the Japanese invaders. The song was created in order to create more interest towards the Korean History using current popular music genre in Korea at the moment.

2) Urban street/ Designer clothing - Similar to American and western rappers and artists, Korean rappers are often seen in designer and urban street clothing like Supreme, Gucci and Louis Vuitton. Often they also mention it in their songs like Jessie's 'Gucci' and Bewhy's '9ucci Bank'. Show Me the Money has also been continually sponsored by Adidas over the couple of years.

Colours

1) Red and Blue - Red and Blue can be seen as representative colours as it is the colours seen in the Korean flag. Red and blue can also symbolise balance as it is seen on a symbol similar to the Yin and Yang in the Korean flag.

2) Gold - As I've found with Korean rappers, they often where lots of gold chains and accessories in order to show-off their wealth and their possessions, I feel like this is kind part of the hiphop culture that's been adapted from America and has been taken by Korean rappers as well. It's especially relevant in the show Show Me the Money where contestants that pass the auditions are given a gold chain and those that fail throughout the process have to put their chains in a pit of fire as a sign of lose and defeat.

3) Black -Black is also often seen worn and used in the music genre, as black can often connote darkness and roughness it is often used in very aggressive and rough music videos and songs making the atmosphere of the music video quite intimidating and also makes the rapper look quite menacing.
