Initial Crit w/ Orlando

  • Make similar illustrations of the micro genre's like Darwin's tables of species.
  • Maybe split in groups to create alterations of logotype design
  • look at scientific idea of dealing with music
  • look at broadnesss of the ways the work...
  • graphic language and aesthetic don't have to straight way shout the contents of the exhibition so we have to communicate it well.
Overall, Orlando seemed to enjoy the theme that we picked for our exhibition and he has given us some ideas which are very similar to the ideas that we also have in mind. Although, he did like our idea he noticed how were going to deep into the 'museum' theme and that we are starting to forget about it being about music and the cassette tapes which I think is where we started to bog wrong because I also felt like we were talking too much about how to make the exhibition more 'museum-y.' and wasn't focused on centring it about the cassette tapes. He also said about our designs being a bit too traditional e.g the catalogue looking like a traditional editorial page, which looking at it again was kind of right as it was literally just text and is in a sans-serif font with a very strong standardised column grid. Also, as well as looking too traditional, he also said how the designs aren't matched or consistent yet and that he noticed 'each designer's touch' which we need to work on because having a consistent collateral is the most important in working on the exhibition for it to work and have a strong branding and advertising edge that others. Because of this he suggested that we slept into two groups to think of other ideas in which we can make our designs more contemporary and modern as well as think more about the point of the exhibition itself.

I think after talking to Orlando we definitely needed to re-arrange and re-organsie what our group needs to do in order to come up with a better and stronger branding strategy for the exhibition. Although, our theme is very strong and we could do so much with it in terms of design and collateral we are making it a bit too obvious and traditional that it may seem too bland and obvious. Our group is deciding to slept into two and redo some designs and new ideas and concepts in each aspect of the collateral e.g. catalogue and invites so that it's more fitting for our brand and the demographic and location that it is aiming to be marketed towards. After hearing that it looks too much like a museum and too old we are deciding to look at more contemporary designs e.g. from galleries and make sure that even thus we are using a museum theme we are not relying on it too much and that we are only using it as a reference without going to deep but instead give it a newer and contemporary feel which sits the aesthetic of the brand as well as the music genres and the cassette, flag and object designs that we are displaying in the exhibition.
