Content, Concept, Form -> Production!

*ALL BOOKS START WITH A QUESTION
you need something to answer in order to create your book

*ALL BOOKS START FROM THEIR CONTENT
its the source of inspiration in itself

*DESIGN AND CONTENT NEED TO GO HAND IN HAND - have the CONTENT in order to support your CONCEPT.

*WHAT IS IT THAT YOU WANT TO COMMUNICATE? WHO DO YOU WANT TO COMMUNICATE TO?

*FIND THE RIGHT BALANCE TO BETWEEN FINDING THE CONTENT AND HAVING THE CONTENT.

The content is the engine of your ideas - anything that you change from your ideas can have an effect from the production, cost etc.

work to RESTRICTIONS!!!

BE AMBITIOUS - WHAT IS A BOOK?
rethink what a book can be or is.

Artists
IRMA BOOM - details, works with unconventional ways for people to play and work with the books, reintroducing ideas of a book to people.
immersing herself in the environment - CHANEL N5 she gets to know the product on a personal level and really bringing out the character of the product.

THINK CLEVER? WHAT HAS NOT BEEN DONE - research about books similar to my research***

Identifying the processes relevant to my research an concept.

VISUAL EDITIONS - Tree of Codes
incorporation of die-cutting
narrative of the word in relation to the production of the book.
PRODUCTION LIMITATIONS AND RESTRICTIONS.
*Find the right production method and understand how the can and can't be done - alternative?

!!!KAPOW!!!
-tell the journey with an experience
how content and form show a certain idea
how is information accessed - folding, cutting, crop, composition, layout
how emotions can be amplified - happy, sad, confused, excited

GORDON MATTA-CLARK - Building Cuts
how can you make a commercial book interesting and viable.

THE CONTENT IS THE ENGINE THAT LEADS TO AN IDEA.

!!!TRAPPED IN SUBURBIA!!!-they design books that are unique, considerate of reader experience, extreme and unlikely.
book* - ROOM TO PLAY
           - CREATIVE CITY THE HAGUE

Really consider the concept and how people and viewers will understand it.

*Consider the limitations of your book - mass production, materials, costs, time

POSITIONING
*where will the book go? where is the right place for the book.
do you need to make the right place for the book?
*conventions of the book in relation to the convention of the space
galleries, book shops, schools, etc.

RESTRICTIONS
*think about the restrictions of the production of the book in relation the concept and idea.
spend time with the book to understand it's concept and the restrictions that are implied.

EXPERIMENT THEN REFINE
CONSIDER AND JUSTIFIED DESIGN INFORMED BY RESEARCH, CONCEPT AND CONTENT.

WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO???
*READING, WATCH, LISTEN

STUDY TASKS
*CONVENTIONS OF THE BOOK
-make a list of all the conventions of the book (everything you have control over)
-acknowledge subject matter
-discuss ways you could tailor/add/manipulate the conventions to communicate the subject matter more effectively.
