Emotionally Intelligent Signage

I came across a page of 'emotionally intelligent signs' which I think could help me generate content ideas for my publication. They were collated by Daniel H. Pink an author of work, management and behavioural books.

Pink describes 'emotionally intelligent signage' as signage that:

  • empathises with the viewer (Don't worry. This line moves quickly) and
  • encourage empathy on the part of the reader in order to gain compliance with a rule (Honor those served. Please stay off the grass.)

I found that most of the signs follow a pattern of trying to be really clever and almost sarcastic which may appeal to some customers /readers as they may think it's really funny. In a way it also has an effect on what we should or shouldn't do as it may be humorous at the same time it may make us double check and rethink our choices so rather than just being informative they are also rather influential, though it has a funny tone to it it has a serious undertone to it. In my opinion, this may be as old-fashioned commanding signs may no longer work as we are too used to them, refreshing humorous and clever signage may catch people off-guard.

From the comments I see from people they mention how it may be a 'motive tied to emotion', and that the receiver of the message is important and how these signages are taken by them.

  • Element of surprise and humour
  • unexpected
  • clever
  • "ditch out the stereotypical emotion...it's a way to put a cheery view of things even if it has to remind us to take precautions.

Humans are emotional beings after all.
