Design Production Process Lecture

Book Sizes - 
PAPER GRAIN - THE DIRECTION IN WHICH FIBRES LAY. THE PAPER IS EASIER TO FOL, BEND, OR TEAR ALONG THE GRAIN.

PAPER CONSIDERATION:

  • ABSORBENCY ,COATED/UNCOATED, OPACITY. WEIGHT, INK HOLDOUT, PRINT QUALITY, PRINT METHOD, COLOUR

Printing 

Offset Print - more suitable for mass production as plates needs to be made so not really suitable for a one of or mock up test; has a high quality finish.

Web Printing - high volume printing

Digital (Inkjet, Laser)

+ Fast turn around, fast set up, one off jobs, testing flexibility
- Slightly lower quality, Cracking in folds, more expensive for higher quality print run. 

Letterpress - relief printing, a raised surfaced that inked up - rotograuve, flexography

Screen printing - low print run, best for one offs?, can fix colours yourself etc.

Risograph - layering technique to produce mutlti coloured prints.
+cost effective, high print run, environmentally friendly.
-  Registration issues, stock consideration, Roller marks - imperfections

Binding 

Spiral, Wiro Binding, Comb Binding, Elastic bands, exposed spine, casebound or hardback, Perfect Binding, Japanese Stab-stich, Coptic Stitch, Pamphlet Stitch, Saddle Stitch, Belly band, Bolt Band, 

Gatefold - a folded page of four panels 
Throw Outs - A folded sheet that opens up on one side.
Tip in - The attachment of a single page in a publicaiton
Tip on - Page that's pasted into, (added in and can be taken out) 

Foil Blocking 
Embossing/Debossing 
Die, Laser and Kiss Cutting 
Duplexing 
Laminate/ Varnish
Trimming and guillotining (Trimming Requirements may be discussed if done with someone else)
