Kirkgate Market Record and Book Fair

Today I went to the Record and Book fair in Leeds Kirkgate Market. I wanted to see if they had any interesting book that may have been bounded or made in an interesting way as the books may be quite old and vintage. Upon going to the fair, I was quite disappointed to see there were only two stalls dedicated to book therefore there weren't much selection  of books.

There were some vintage football magazines made out of thin glossy paper much like the normal magazines we have today. The typography on them however, were quite personalised and manipulated in order to suit the theme and concept of the magazine which I found unique. There were a prominent usage of thick almost 'bubbly' lettering but still looking masculine through the thick stems.

The rest of the books that were there were quite antique and vintage. Most if not all of them were hardback and with the cover made of leather or a similar kind of material, which feels very sturdy and strong. This kind book bound may have been appropriate to the contents and context of the books, as I feel like most of the books were from the 1900's or maybe even earlier. The contents of the books may have been novels, theatrical or quite intellectual and serious accounts and stories.

They also varied in sizes, some were pocket sized like A5 or just a bit bigger and fairly thick. This may be also why they were bounded as hardbacks for economical reasons, where they had to protect the actual pages of the book in some way in order for it to not get ruined. As the papers are also relatively thin much like newsprint/newspaper paper, hard covers were appropriate. The colours also stood out form these hardbacks as they came in assorted bright and dark colours showing a variety of different way the book can be perceived. In addition, most of the title covers were probably embossed in some way as the texture is quite apparent when you touch and feel the book, which I think further emphasises the traditional way of book bounding which was popular and apparent in the old days.

Overall, I wished there were more variety to what I've found but I think it was also good to see kind of old and traditional like books to see a different side of how I can bound and cover my publication in comparison to more contemporary and modern book bounding techniques.
